Computers Are Open CC.0 by Alan Levine

Our CESI Open Café series will recommence on Thursday, 9th October at 19:30. We’re delighted to be joined by Thibaud Keller and Conor Murphy to share their work with open-source software and open education. This conversation is open to all. Please register on Zoom to receive the link.

Thibaud Keller (PhD Student, Maynooth University)

Thibaud started his journey with Linux and open-source software while working as a technician at the Studio for Research and Creation in Computer Music (SCRIME, Bordeaux, France). He undertook the installation and maintenance of Linux on all computers in the studio (classroom and residence spaces). This work was presented at the 2019 Linux Audio Conference in Stanford. The following year, Thibaud was one of the main organizer of this conference in Bordeaux. His commitment to open-source continued in his role of developer and system administrator at the Euclid company (Geneva, Switzerland). Since 2024, he is the beneficiary of the Enterprise Partnership Scheme, which enabled him to come to Ireland and pursue a PhD in Music technology at Maynooth University.

Conor Murphy (Community Manager, Dublin Linux Community)

I have been working in the IT support sphere for over 10 years, in various roles. I was introduced to my first computer as a child by my father, who was a primary school teacher and had the computer post in his school.  It was running Windows 3.11. I’ve used various versions of Windows since (98, XP, 7, 10, 11).

My first exposure to the Linux operating system was in 2006, and that was Ubuntu. Then began a periodic wipe of my personal laptop as new versions came out, to see if it met my daily computing needs. If it didn’t, then I reinstalled Windows. I took over the running of the Dublin Linux Community in 2018 and have been full-time (no dual booting) on Linux on all my daily personal computers since.
