The Potential Use of Social Software in Rural Irish Schools

Presented by:
Jim O’Sullivan & Sally Reynolds

This presentation will describe the work being undertaken in the SoRuraLL Project, a 2 year European Commission supported Lifelong Learning Project that began in January 2009. The objective of SoRuraLL is to investigate how schools and other educational bodies in rural parts of Europe can use simple social networking tools to break down barriers and access educational opportunities. SoRuraLL involves partners in Greece, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria and Poland as well as Ireland.
8 Primary and 2 Secondary schools in Co. Clare are taking part in this project and are using a mix of user generated web sites and blogs to publish information about their school including sports results, project work and other news from the school. Several are also using Skype to support collaborative projects with other schools.
Training and monitoring is provided by the project support team and carried out with the support of Clare Education Centre.
This presentation will report on the work undertaken thus far and the challenges and opportunities such initiatives bring. It will also provide an opportunity to network with other practitioners engaged in similar activities in other parts of Ireland. The presentation is aimed at those interested in the practicalities of setting up similar projects and who wish to share experience and best practice.
