21st Century Classroom: Connecting teachers and children through 'play' technology - The Nintendo DS and Wii
The tools of the workshop are the toys of students themselves -Nintendo DS and Wii. Console games provide an active and collaborative approach to learning, rapid feedback responses to decisions and most importantly, a friendly environment where players can develop skills essential for the 21st Century. The aim of the workshop is to show: the way teachers are using the Nintendo DS and Wii in schools, using programmes such as Maths Training, Professor Layton, Wii Music and Wii Sport as a way of engaging and inspiring children across a range of curriculum areas - Literacy, Maths, Music and PE, through team work.how the Pictochat facility of the DS and the message board of the Wii can be used as a means of communicating ideas.how educators can facilitate and guide the ability to collaborate across boundaries within the context of an eTwinning project - an initiative of the European Commission which provides teachers with a simple, effective framework for ‘twinning’ with schools throughout Europe. Flexibility, variety and creativity are at the core of eTwinning which results in opportunities to use this technology in new and exciting ways, within an educational environment. Participants are invited to bring along their DS for an interactive experience. Teachers will also have an opportunity to ‘play’ with the Wii (in groups of 4) and consider how it can be used in conjunction with other innovative Web 2.0 technologies such as blogging, podcasting and social networking, within a safe and secure learning environment. Please note: Anyone wishing to attend this workshop should bring a Nintendo DS.
