The Wiimote Interactive Whiteboard Explored

Presented by:
Enda Donlon

The Wiimote Whiteboard is an approach whereby any standard whiteboard (almost any surface at all for that matter) may be given capabilities and qualities similar to those of an Interactive Whiteboard, using free software, pens which can be constructed quite inexpensively, and a standard Wiimote (Wii controller). The approach was first demonstrated and made famous by Johnny Lee of Carnegie Mellon University, and since then the number of teachers and tech enthusiasts who are experimenting with and adopting this system to their own needs and classrooms continues to grow.

This presentation aims to:

  • demonstrate a Wiimote Whiteboard in use, and put forward the presenters own experience of setting up this system;
  • outline fully what is needed to set up and run the system;
  • discuss where to source the different parts and different ways to do this;
  • explore some of the different software options available;
  • explore and discuss some of the nuances associated with this particular approach;
  • hopefully begin a creative dialogue around this subject.
