From Skerrydoo to Carrickfadda - The 2003 eSchola winning project
'From Skerrydoo to Carrickfadda' was a schools heritage and ICT project coordinated and supported by the ICT Advisor, Sligo Education Centre and the Heritage Officer, Sligo County Council. The project ran in 12 County Sligo primary schools and sought to promote high levels of awareness and understanding of seashore heritage amongst the participants. It also intended to give them the opportunity to use ICT to present and disseminate their findings. The success of the project was due to the many supports provided to the participating schools. These included a guest speaker for each school speaking on a sea related topic, a 10 hour art support programme from an artist and ICT training on digital media as well as ongoing support from the project co-ordinators. Printed resource materials and computing equipment were also given to the schools.
The participating teachers agreed that each class involved would undertake a local study of the coastline near their school and then record their findings. While the programme of work would not be prescriptive a number of headings were agreed as guidelines. These were Animals, Habitats and Plants, Man and the Sea and History of our Coast. During the first part of the project, which ran from October 2001 to May 2002, students studied their chosen topics and then recorded their findings through essays, stories, written articles, artwork, crafts, puppets, photographs, maps and multimedia presentations. Each class then had a school launch of their project and a project launch was held in Sligo Education Centre in June 2002.
The second phase of the project ran from September 2002 to June 2003 and involved the collection and organisation of all the project material in preparation for the construction of a website which would not only showcase the work done in the schools but also provide extra resources for teachers and students. The project website, www.sligoseashore.com was launched in June 2003 and in October 2003 it was awarded first prize at the 2003 eSchola awards.
